Joanne
Burton

Mezzo-soprano

Jo is a vocalist familiar to Sydney audiences through her work with the Song Company, Cantillation, Halcyon new music ensemble and Pinchgut Opera.

Equally at home with early and contemporary music, Jo toured extensively with the Song Company over a period of 10 years throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and the USA. As part of early music festivals Jo was delighted to perform works by Monteverdi, Lassus, Gesualdo and Josquin ( to name a few). Works by contemporary Australian composers such as Andrée Greenwell were also presented in Europe and extremely well received.

During this time under the directorship of Roland Peeleman Jo was involved in several significant Australian productions. These included the Rainbow Warrior by Colin Bright performed at the Maritime Museum on board the HMAS Vampire; ‘Quito’ the music documentary drama by Martin and Peter Wesley-Smith performed in Australia and the Netherlands to rapt audiences and The Burrow by Michael Smetanin which required the 3 female singers to master the technically challenging but extremely effective feat of singing a semitone apart throughout.

Jo features on many Song Company recordings which are still regularly played on ABC Classic FM with a personal favourite being I Fiamminghi in Italia (Flemish Composers in Italy).

As a solo/ensemble artist highlights for Jo include The Goethe Lieder by Dallapiccola with the Australia Ensemble at UNSW; Music for 18 Musicians with Halcyon and Synergy at the Sydney Opera House in the presence of the composer Steve Reich; the premier of Australian composer Tim Hansen’s song cycle the Sharpest Piece with Hourglass Ensemble in the Utzon Room and alto soloist as part of Sydney Grammar School’s Bach Cantata series.

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we work and perform, the Gadigal people of the Eora nation – the first storytellers and singers of songs.
We pay our respects to their elders past and present.
