Matthew is a concertmaster, soloist and core member of some of the world’s leading period instrument ensembles. He has been a member of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra since 2006 before moving to The Hague, The Netherlands, where he studied Baroque Violin at The Royale Conservatoire. After completing post-graduate studies, he has continued to enjoy performing with a variety of international ensembles and festivals in Australia, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Poland, and Canada.
Matthew has been a regular member of Pinchgut Opera since his first performance in 2006. He has performed in twenty-one opera productions and has been a concert master since 2015. He performs in a variety of other ensembles and festivals, including the Australian Haydn Ensemble, De Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Netherlands Bach Society), Les Talens Lyriques (Paris), Festival D’Aix en Provence, Opera Nationale de Paris & Capella Mediterranea (Switzerland). He is also a founding member of the Sydney based baroque ensemble, The Muffat Collective.
As an enthusiastic violin teacher, Matthew enjoys sharing his knowledge of historical performance practices with young professionals at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and a variety of primary and secondary schools in Sydney. Governed by his commitment to producing a unique and individual sound, Matthew’s approach to music is based on his knowledge of historical performance. He believes that seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music is full of vitality, energy and emotions that speak to us now, as much as they did in the past.
