Mezzo-soprano

Nicole Smeulders is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She has twice been recipient of the Lauris Elms’ Contralto Award and has had an extensive career as an alto soloist. Nicole’s most recent performances include The Messiah for Newcastle University and lunchtime recitals at St James King Street and St Paul’s Church Burwood. Highlights of her solo career include Elijah for Willoughby Symphony Choir, Karl Loos’ Stabat Mater for The Sydney Consort, Haydn Requiem for the Australian Haydn Ensemble, El Amor Brujo for the Penrith Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Nevsky for Kuringgai Philahrmonic, CPE Bach Magnificat for the Sydney University Graduates’ Choir, A Child of Our Time for Musicum Collegium and Messiah for the Combined Church Choirs at the Sydney Town Hall.

 Nicole has a long association with Opera Australia and is currently working full time as a chorister. She recently performed in Il Trovatore, Madam Butterfly and La Traviata in Sydney and Lohengrin in Melbourne, (where she sang one of the Female Page roles). With Cantillation, she has performed on numerous CDs and films, (including the Lego and Peter Rabbit movies) and has been engaged in concert performances with the SSO and the ACO. As part of Pinchgut Opera chorus, she has sung in Handel’s Athalia and Theodora, Gluck’s Iphigenie en Tauride, Rameau’s Castor and Pollux and Haydn’s opera L’anima del filosofo. Nicole has worked and toured with the Song Company, the ACO Voices, and Hallelujah Junction. She performs regularly as cantor at St Francis Catholic Church Paddington.
