A shining success from its very first performance in 1724,  Julius Caesar is a riveting exploration of power, grief and desire. Set against a backdrop of political intrigue, this Baroque masterpiece which delves into the complexities of ambition and love, is the perfect vehicle for Handel's dramatic genius.

The story plunges us into the bloodthirsty world of the Roman empire
Caesar's rival Pompeo has been cruelly executed by the Egyptian king, Tolomeo But while Pompeo's widow grieves and his son Sesto vows vengeance, Tolomeo's sister Cleopatra decides to seduce Caesar to tip the balance of power in her own favour.

However, as events unfold, Cleopatra and Caesar discover that they have fallen in love. Tolomeo's defeat is now imperative, and a feud between the siblings becomes an all-out war.
With alliances constantly shifting, who will emerge victorious?

George Frideric Handel
(1685-1756)

Born on 23 February 1685 in Halle, Germany, Handel grew up under the watchful eyes of his parents; while his mother nurtured his musical gifts, his father tried to dissuade him from pursuing the dubious occupation of a musician. Following brief law studies at the local university, Handel travelled to Hamburg, where he scraped a living as a back-desk violinist at the opera house and composed his first opera Almira. By late 1706 he decided to travel independently to Italy, where he composed church, secular and theatre music for illustrious patrons in Florence, Rome, Naples and Venice; he also met numerous Italian composers who significantly influenced his work, such as Arcangelo Corelli, Alessandro Scarlatti, his son Domenico Scarlatti, Giacomo Perti, Bernardo Pasquini, Francesco Gasparini, Antonio Caldara and many others.

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we work and perform, the Gadigal people of the Eora nation – the first storytellers and singers of songs.
We pay our respects to their elders past and present.
